Aged Care Visitors Volunteer Scheme

The Aged Care Volunteer Visitor Scheme (ACVVS) is an Australian government-funded program that helps alleviate the social isolation faced by many older Australians through volunteer visits. It is available to those who are socially isolated and receiving government-subsidised residential aged care or Home Care Packages, including those approved or on the National Priority System for residential or home care packages. Around 140 community organisations (auspices) deliver ACVVS services by matching older people with volunteers for friendship and companionship.

The ACCVS is free and places particular emphasis on older individuals from diverse or vulnerable backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, veterans, LGBTIQ+ individuals, and those living with disabilities, dementia, or mental health conditions. Through regular visits by volunteers, the well-being and lives of vulnerable older people are improved, helping them feel valued, connected, and supported members of the community.

Volunteer visitors play a vital role in the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme. Becoming an aged care volunteer visitor offers a meaningful opportunity to make a positive impact on an older person’s life while also enriching your own. As a volunteer, you’ll form genuine connections through shared stories, companionship, simple conversation, and help an older person experiencing loneliness and social isolation.

Visits typically last about an hour and take place once a fortnight, scheduled at a time that suits both you and the person you’re visiting. The visits can occur in the older person’s home, an aged care facility, or a local public venue.

Volunteer visitors come from all cultural and social backgrounds. They have a little spare time and are prepared to make a regular, ongoing commitment.
